Economy

Russia's economy is an upper-middle-income mixed market economy, whose current characteristics stem largely from the major reforms of the 1990s.

The national currency of Russia is the ruble. One ruble is equivalent to 100 kopeks. You can exchange currency (dollars, euros) in banks or in exchange offices on the streets, in hotels, supermarkets, stations and airports. The exchange rate is determined by the Central Bank of Russia. Exchange offices exist in practically all cities. In the capital and large cities there are offices that are open 24 hours a day.

The Russian ruble fell after the tightening of sanctions. The currency fell by almost 30% and reached an all-time low of 119 to the dollar. If Russia continues with the dispute, the value of its currency could plummet completely, leaving the country poorer.

Investors flocked to safe-haven currencies such as the dollar and the yen after Russian President Vladimir Putin put the nuclear armed forces on high alert on Sunday.

The West is doubling down on Putin's financial war. Although alliances with China and cryptocurrencies could mitigate the scope of these measures.

Sanctions targeted Russia's central bank, which intervened to prop up the value of the ruble after the invasion of Ukraine began.

When sanctions were declared on Russia Russian banks opted to exclude Russia from the Swift international payment system for the first time.

If the war continues any longer, there could be a huge inflation that would affect the whole world.
